The Child and Family Center is dedicated to understanding and promoting mental health and resilience in families in all cultural communities. CFC emphasizes research on social-emotional development from infancy through adolescence and strives toward innovation in assessment, prevention, and intervention services for children and families. CFC seeks to collaborate with local, tribal, state, national, and international organizations and researchers engaged in similar efforts to understand and promote mental health in children and families.

The CFC partners with the Prevention Science Institute (PSI) to improve the lives and well-being of at-risk children, individuals, and families throughout their lifespan. The PSI is entirely funded by federal grants and other sponsored research. The PSI includes faculty from the University of Oregon who work together to understand prevention and health promotion through translational science and applied intervention research.

Researchers working at the CFC have published hundreds of articles in scientific journals and chapters in textbooks about children, adolescents, and their families. Books for parents as well as books for clinicians have also been published, along with numerous films, videotapes, and audiotapes on parenting. They also have been highlighted in popular national magazines such as Atlantic Monthly, Family Circle, and Psychology Today, as well as on national and international television programs.
